In this paper we will be taking a look at some of the more controversial topics concerning life issues. There are, like every other topic, two main opinions on each one. For example, whether or not we should use capital punishment on felons? Or is euthanasia really okay? The two issues mentioned above and the issues of eugenics, genetic engineering, and abortion will be discussed in this paper. First, I will state the facts and opinions about each side of the issues and then at the end I will give my own opinion on each one.

First, let’s take a look at capital punishment. The issue of whether or not a person or persons convicted of a felony, murder in particular, should be sentenced to death (WikiCap). Now, like every other issue in the world, everyone doesn’t agree that these people should be sent to death. Though it is used rarely (WikiCap), they believe that this makes us no better than those that have killed the innocent. While others believe that we should follow the saying, “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”

Euthanasia – Another controversial topic is euthanasia, euthanasia means “painless death” or “good death” (WikiEuth). Euthanasia is the act of painlessly putting someone who is suffering or terminally ill to death. Euthanasia is used/would be used on patients that are terminally ill and are suffering; this would be the only appropriate time to use such methods. One of the two sides of this issue is that doing this is murder and it is morally wrong to kill someone. It is said to be “assisted suicide” and family members would like to spend as much  time with their loved one. The second is that it is morally wrong to let a person suffer this much.

·                     eugenics –

Another life issue that has been in debate is genetic engineering, which began in the 1990s (WikiGen). Genetic engineering is “modifying the genotype of the unborn individual to control what traits it will possess when born.” – WikiGen. There are two different types of genetic engineering, therefore are two different sides on each one, but they are basically the same opinions. The first type of genetic engineering would only affect that one offspring, it is called “Somatic” (WikiGen). The second type of genetic engineering is called “Germline” which affects not only the first offspring, but all the offspring that follows, this could be irreversible and therefore has not been tried on humans yet (WikiGen).

Let’s start with Somatic. Some people think that this is a form of eugenics, that we are trying to get rid of traits that we think are “undesirable.” Others, however, believe that this can be beneficial in the sense that it will get rid of those traits that put the offspring’s life in danger and it isn’t a permanent change in the gene line. Next let’s talk about Germline, this one is a more touchy subject than the other. This one is adding a 24^th chromosome to the DNA (WikiGen) and this is permanent change. The first opinion

The next subject in this paper is abortion. There are two different types of abortion, spontaneous and induced abortions, obviously we are talking about induced abortions, one of the most controversial topics out and has been for quite some time. The most well known case of whether or not abortion should be allowed, and the decider is “Roe vs. Wade.” The two main position is pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life: Believe that it is murder, morally wrong, and that people having abortions are killing off a generation. Some pro-lifers believe that “the pill” is a form of abortion. Pro-choice: Believe that it is up to the person, that it would be taking away freedoms if it was illegal, and that if it becomes illegal then the government would be telling us what we could and couldn’t do with our own bodies.
